Q: DG, please advise. there is a waitress at a restaurant that i frequent. she smiles (she has the best smile in the world) each time i come in, we chit chat. i would love to ask her out but i dont want to be "that guy". i have no idea if she is dating someone or not. i never see her out, only at work. my thought it to just go in, ask if she'd like to hang out after she got off work. good first move or do i need to do more recon work (find out if she is dating someone) before i ask her out? thanks!!
A: Just ask her straight up but with some tact. Start with the ole “I’ve never done this before….” Don’t do too much investigating or it’ll seem weird / stalkerish.
Let me know how it goes!

Q: I know you’ve answered this before but can I get flowers for a girl before I go out with her?
A: If you know her and you think she’s into you, then go for it but make sure you’re not overwhelming her. If you don’t know her, it may seem a little superficial or infatuated and you should put it off until you at least go out with her once!

Q: Date 4 with a guy. We’re going to a baseball game which I’m already not into. And its gonna rain – or looks like it. what do I wear?
Help
A: Wear jeans or capris depending on the heat, a cute t-shirt or step above a t-shirt, bring a rain jkt (if it can stuff in your purse, that’d be great) and go with comfortable flip flops or cute gym shoes. Perfect! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for no rain!!! Hopefully you won’t need the rain jkt.

Q: Met a girl. super cool, cute and surprisingly single. Can I call her today? we went out last night.
A: You could call today or tomorrow. just make sure you don’t come on too strong if you think you’re more into it than she is. If she’s on the fence and as cool as you say, you could tip her the wrong way with too any calls, texts, dates. If you think she’s just as into it, then go all out!

Q: Hey DG, not like I haven't ever done this before, haha, but just out of curiosity, could you give me some obvious signs a girl is hinting for a kiss?
A: Eye contact, lingering longer and closer than normal, fidgeting for keys when you get to the driveway or door, stalling the goodbye, the extra look when saying goodbye or the oh so obvious “I want to kiss” look (head down, eyes up, and a big pucker).

Q: Hey DG, Thank you for your help always! I have two new ones for you. I feel like 1 is for your male readership:
1.) The other day my best guy friend and I were chillin on the couch and my cat was suckering us for attention, when he does one of those adorable paw in the face squirmy "pet me" things, and my buddy stops in the middle of his sentence, and says, "Oh my God, you did not just do that, that was so cute." What can a girl do to incite that response in men?
And an actual dilemma:
2.) I am so flattered, I got Craigslist Missed Connectioned. But, the guy isn't really my type, from my brief impressions. Should I still give him a try? How do I hang out with him without leading him on? I did the whole, "I'll be at x location with my friends, maybe I'll see you there..." but his suggestions are more like, "I'll be here (by himself) and I hope I see you there." I'm trying to be breezy, but how?
Thank you so much- I love your column and I've read it fo r years!
A: 1) Thanks so much for being a fan! I love that.
2) Some “cute” things to do:

Q: How do you greet someone on the first date?
A: I’m into the ole half hug. A little dorky but it’s warm and usually gets a little chuckle. Just go in confidently and don’t back down even when you see the handshake coming. No one really likes a handshake.

Q: I've been dating this guy on and off for 2 years. we aren't the most conventional couple. we don't do the mushy gush, but we love each other. the first time we broke up it was over some friend of his that was a girl who was texting him while we were out partying. i was the bigger person two days later i made it sound like it was both of our faults. two weeks later him and two of his buddies took that girl and her friend on what was supposed to be our romantic vacation together. i was fine i was dating again and becoming happy again. well happier than i have been for awhile. he begged me to take him back and i did. the second time he pushed me away and i fought but in the end i was unhappy so i broke up with him. this time i wasn't the perfect person he knew. i wasn't gonna take care of him after all of that. i was moving away so he decided to move away. i wanted to say goodbye after all we had been together for two years. in the entire two years i'd dated him he said everyth ing i'd ever wanted him to say in those previous years. three weeks later he called...i took him back. he wants to be with me together forever. im not sure yet. our relationship isnt all that bad with us not caring about each other for the first year it was stressful i had major surgery and then was diagnosed with a heart problem. he went to every doctors appointment ever moment he was by my side. when i went into surgery he was supposed to be here but he was spending the summer with his dad. he said he'd come if he could. he didn't. he's lied, doesn't communicate with me sometimes. I'm not perfect. but both my family and my friends think I'm getting used. what do you think?
A: Sounds like a pretty volatile relationship. Not sure it’s the best for either of you. You seem to have the passion but not the trust. One is pulling while the other pushes. Is there a time when you’re just both in love and content?
Hard to know from this amt of info, but it sounds to me like you’re both trying to not get hurt first and if that means pushing the other away or closing off, then that’s what you do.
Sorry to be the messenger!

Q: I need an outside opinion on this, there is this girl we dated for a little while back in November. Since then we have been just friends; though it felt like I was more her secretary than a friend, have made out almost every time we run into each other outside of school, and had two drunk yelling matches about other girls we were seeing; the last one her decided to not talk to me for almost 2 months and ended with us kissing. She says that she doesn't trust me and when I asked why she keeps kissing me she replied with an I don't know. This seems to happen a lot with us we fight, make out a few months later, then fight, but last night she said we have a weird relationship......I would have to agree but I would like an outsiders opinion.
A: Definitely weird and unhealthy. Sounds like you have the passion but not a great working relationship outside of that. You can’t give each other what the other needs and it ends up in fights.
You should either know you’re just FWB (friends with benefits) or you should call it quits before someone really gets hurt.
Hope that helps

Q: How many emails have to go back and forth before I ask a girl out?

Q: it's been 3 years now. 1st year great - 2nd year, major trauma - 3rd year, another major trauma. without going into too much gory detail, let's just say that there is lying, cheating, and abandonment involved.
i've forgiven the unforgiveable, asked him to fix what he destroyed, and told him i want more commitment. he told me he wasn't ready, so i break up with him. then he begs me to take him back - i believe him because i love him and we end up back in limbo a year later.
the last 2 years have been a serious roller coaster. he's grown more beligerent. i've grown more depressed. i keep doing things to make him happy but no reciprocation. i don't want to give him an ultimatum, but i am pretty corner now. what should i do?
A: Why aren’t you breaking up with him? why do you want him to stay if you’re both unhappy? You’ve tried this a handful of times and it seems wrong. I wouldn’t even give an ultimatum, I would just end it.
Sorry for being so mean but you deserve better than this!

Q: Hey DG! Wondering your take on my current situation...
Ive been dating the same guy for almost 3 years... for the past year his family has been getting more and more "crazy" to say the least... today I was talking with one of my friends and she said "I know you love him, but is there ever a point when you start thinking about your in-laws and your furture children's grandparents and you decide, 'as great as you are, this isn't the extended family life I have imagined for me' and have to break things off with him?"
He is wonderful, college educated, hard working, treats me great, makes a good living, is great with my family, I could go on and on, but I think you get the positives.... and simply put, no, it's not the extended family I would have ever imagined. Especially because I am from a very large, yet surprisingly functional family. I don't condone many of their actions, but neither does he and is very embarrassed by them. Is this really something I should be thin king about before making any future plans??? I know it hurts him to see his family fall a part and I also know that he nor I am able to pick our family. Do I tell my friend she is being rediculous, or does she really have my best interest in mind?
A: If you’re considering breaking up with him because of his family then there must be something else awry. If you’re 100% in love with him, the family shouldn’t matter enough to cause too much strain. Either tell the friend she’s ridiculous or, if you agree with her, then you should examine your relationship with him a little deeper cuz there’s probably something else wrong besides the fam.
Hope that makes sense!

Q: Can I get a girl a flight to visit me if we’ve never been on a date?
A: You should visit her for date 1. She’ll be better in her own element and hate to be old fashioned but, you should pick her up on the first date!

Q: Does the trash pick up change this week cuz of the 4th? I know this isn’t a dating question but I thought you’d know.
A: That’s a question for Trapper. He’s the trash expert!! I bet it’s the same day this week since the 4th was Friday.

Q: Should I take a girl to a fancy restaurant or cook her something amazing?
A: Love that you want to cook for her. If you’ve been out at least 5 times already then go for it. If you haven’t been on 5 then go out. Cooking is intimate and can be awkward if you don’t know each other well enough.

Q: Do I have to watch fireworks with my GF for the 4th? she’s so into it and I hate them.
A: I’m not big on fireworks either. Way too many Ooohs and Aaahs. If you’ve been dating less than 4 months, you should go. If longer, skip it and tell her she gets a pass on your next horrible activity.

Q: So... I am going to meet my boyfriends parents for the first time- it's been two years, and now I am going to stay with them for 4 days, I feel like I should definitely bring something for them- or do something for them... Do you have any suggestions????
A: Bring them a present. You can get flowers when you get there or do something local. If you’re from Michigan, get U of M tees or something like that. If you don’t want to go to that much trouble, you can always do soaps or candy.
Good luck!!
