Q: Hey, so I met this guy at a benefit concert. He’s really cute, and real nice. I get really nervous and I can’t talk to guys well. I want to hang out with him and whatever, but I don’t know how to ask him!
A: Toughie but you just have to buck up and do it if you’re done waiting for him to ask. There’s really NO easy way. Make it casual and work it into conversation. So don’t say, “Do you want to go out some time?” Instead say, “Have you been to that new Italian place downtown? I keep meaning to try it. Wanna go with me sometime?”
Let me know how it goes!

Q: whats the best way to impress a girl without coming on too strong? i have a crush on a girl i work with and want to ask her out for coffee or something like that but dont want it to seem like a hot date if she says no or it doesnt work out? thanks
A: Just keep it pretty casual so it's not weird later but make it date-like enough that you don't get into the dreaded friend area.... So ask her out for coffee just like you would anyone else but then when you're there and you get a good read, get a little more flirty so she knows it's not just friends out for coffee.

Q: Went out with this girl last night. Told her I’d call but now after thinking about it, I don’t want to anymore. is that ok or do I need to call and tell her I’m not going to call?!

Q: My boyfriend and I have been going out for a month and a half and holidays are approaching! I got him a shirt and a bandana. And I am knitting him a hat (which he asked for, I'm not surprising him with a hand knit hat). None of these things were very expensive but we haven't been going out for very long and we never agreed on a price to spend for holidays. Do you think this is ok? I started worrying because my sister got her boyfriend an expensive belt and they just started dating! We are both broke college students but i have no idea what he is getting me (he said something but gave no details). Thanks
A: I think you spent enough but if not, you can always get 1 more thing, hide it in the closet and if you don't want to give it last minute because you get your pres and find you did spend enough then you leave it there and return it the next day. Make sure it's returnable!

Q: Dating Girl I desperately need your advice. Long story short, I met this guy over the summer that I am completely crazy about. However, he has no idea how I feel. We hung out all the time in the summer as friends. Now we live a few hours away from each other but we talk everyday. He's become a really good friend but its killing me not to tell him how I feel. I don't want to make things weird between us, and I am really not brave about that kind of stuff. What do I do dating girl? He seriously is the perfect guy for me.
A: You need to appreciate her too. You need to know that staying home with the kids is a huge job and she needs some love too. Bring flowers home, write a little love note, wash the dishes. Do something for her and she’ll feel much more like getting you those beers while you watch the game!

Q: Hi Dating Girl,
I recently hooked one of my coworkers up on a blind date with a guy I know. Things went well and they hit it off right away. But, sure enough, after 3 months the love faded and he sorta stopped calling her. He totally ended things with her via text message. My question is - even though we are in a progressive society where texting and email have become a solid form of communication, is it now acceptable to break up with someone using that outlet?
A: NO! You can’t break up over text! I love a good text instead of a call as much as anyone but have some guts to pick up the phone and do your dirty work. Having said all that, if I was the one to deliver the bad news, I would love to text it and would find every way to make it seem acceptable.

Q: I'm on a serious diet and really don't wanna cheat. Is it ok to not drink on my date??
A: You'll have to make up an excuse. Meds is always a good one. You can tell him you're on an antibiotic and not allowed to drink. Or you can suck it up and get one and tell them tall so there's more soda than vodka and then just sip it. Or, there's always the ole honesty thing - if you're into that!

Q: So I dated a woman this past spring/summer who had just gotten out of a long/serious relationship/engagement. She told me from the outset that she still had some unresolved feelings for the guy, and she and he ultimately got back together. The boyfriend works with a friend of mine, and I hear enough from my friend to think that things won't last much longer between them this second time. I've dated a bit since she dumped me, but I'm not dating anyone right now and would like to try again with her if/when I get a chance. Until things change with her and the boyfriend, should I a) have absolutely no contact with her whatsoever, b) call/email her every couple weeks, just to let her know that I'm still alive and haven't forgotten her, or c) something else? I've been doing b), if that matters.
A: If it’s meant to be, you could do a, b, or c and it’ll be. If it’s not meant to be, you could do a, b, or c and it won’t be. Having said that, if you don’t believe in all that bs, I like b. Just keep doing what you’re doing to keep contact and be there when the guy leaves. Keep in mind though, she’ll be vulnerable at that point and when /if she comes running into your arms, she may still be thinking of the ex. Just keep that in mind.

Q: It’s my anniversary and I forgot a present. We’re supposed to have dinner in an hour! What do I do?!
A: Either get an online gift certif – lots of places have them now and you can just print it out. Or make a cute card with whatever you may have gotten her that happens to be “on order because the store ran out. It was supposed to be in yesterday but they screwed up!” Then make sure to go tomorrow and get it.

A: Well, there are a few ways. A) cook him his favorite dinner and dessert B) massage C) sports and a beer D) I don't think I'm allowed to say here E) give him a little space (but not too much)
Hope that helps!

Q: I work with this hot guy who definitely flirts with me. I have a boyfriend and love him. is it cheating if I flirt back?
A: If you’re questioning it, it’s probably not the right thing to do. If it was no big deal, you wouldn’t think about it enough to email me! So yes, you should stop. You’re giving the work guy the wrong idea too.

A: If you’re good at it, it’s good but if you use too much tongue, lick her face or make it so she can’t breathe, then yes it sucks. Don’t cover her mouth with your mouth. Don’t try to suck the breath out of her. don’t shove your tongue down her throat.

Q: What do I do if the guy I’m dating just introduced me as his girlfriend. We never had the talk and it’s only been a month!
A: If you’re into him, then just enjoy and be thankful that you didn’t need the talk! If you’re not into him, you better have a talk making sure he doesn’t think you’re somehting you’re not. Be open, honest and don’t string him along if you don’t like him. If you’re scared, get over it! The rest of us are jealous!! Really though, just take it slowly and if he’s pushing too hard, you’ll need a talk letting him know so he doesn’t push you away.

Q: Dating Girl,
I met this classmate of mine at a bar with some friends. Got her number. She's incredibly busy during the week. She seems into me. But when I see her at school, she always seems really stressed out and not interesting in talking to anyone. I want to ask her out. How do I do it? Should I just text her so as not to waste her time?
A: Yeah, text or call outside of school. Some girls think text is too impersonal for the ask out but if you start making convo on text, that’s fine. She seems busy and might appreciate the abruptness of text. Just be confident and don’t apologize for taking up her time or anything like that. LMK how it goes.

Q: Dear Dating Girl,
There is this girl that I met last december, and hands down is the best girl I have ever met as far as compatible and attrativness. We went to college together but didn't know each other then, and now she is in grad school in north carolina about 2 and a half hours away(I'm in Richmond, VA.) When I party with this girl each time ends up being one of the funnest nights of my life, but she has a bf of 4 years, that I know she has, but she has never once mentioned him to me. There have been a couple times while we are drinking and dancing that we kissed a few times. I guess my question is, most women in long term relationships wouldn't be sending me the kind of texts and phone calls that she does if she was serious about her boyfriend. I get texts, saying we should make-out, and she wishes she could just have her way with me; I realize it is probably in a joking manner, but it still gets my interest. I would like to tell her how I feel, but I would rather do it in person and I only see her about once a month. Seeing as her bf lives 40 minutes from where she goes to schoool now, and even though she has been dating him for years, do you think I should keep pursueing her? Most girls I know love talking about their boyfriends, but she has not once mentioned him to me, so I wonder if she is interested or if I am just someone she has fun with.
A: This is bad news. A girl with a bf of 4 years shouldn’t be sex texting/ flirting/ calling another guy. She’s not discussing the guy because she has a crush on you. A little flirting is probably excusable but if I were the boyfriend, I’d say this is definitely crossing the line. You can discuss it with her but the discussion should be whether or not she’s breaking up with the boy, not whether or not y’all should make out!
Sorry to be so mean but when she’s dating you, you wouldn’t want this going on with some other guy.
Hope that helps a little. Love ya!!

Q: I'm falling for this guy who's married. I really don't think he likes his wife and he's super flirty with me. What do it do?
A: You have to look elsewhere. Find another guy to crush on. If he's married, he's married and nothing good can come out of cheating. Wait until he's separated. If he really doesn't like her, it may come sooner than later. Really, find another guy.

A: You need to replace the old habit (this guy) with a new habit (working out, going to coffee shop, crosswords, a new guy, etc). Once you’re thinking about the new thing, you’ll think less about the guy who’s not thinking about you at all!

Q: My GF won't show me any appreciation. All I ask is that she get me a few beers while I watch the game on TV. She just won't do it. I work hard all week and she just stays home with the kids. How can I explain to her that I deserve a little appreciation for doing my part?
A: You need to appreciate her too. You need to know that staying home with the kids is a huge job and she needs some love too. Bring flowers home, write a little love note, wash the dishes. Do something for her and she’ll feel much more like getting you those beers while you watch the game!

Q: Dear Dating Girl
I'm getting back into the dating scene after a breakup with my longtime boyfriend. I would like to try an internet dating service but I'm concerned about my safety. Can you recommend some safety precautions for going out on a date with a man who is essentially a stranger?
Thanks
A: Yeah, I’m definitely not trained to give safety advice so you may want to check with someone who is, but this is what I know: Tell people where you’re going. Make sure they know when you leave and when to expect you home and set up a call time for the ending. Meet him, don’t let him pick you up. Only meet the guy at a public and popular place so other people are around. If you’re still scared, have a friend go to the same place to watch over you anonymously

Q: I have a quick question: Got up the gumption to ask a girl I've been in to for a long time out to coffee. Conversation on the phone went well; she sounded (and said she was) happy that I had called. Today, though, she bagged out on the mini-date two hours before... via text message no less. "Economics study group." Sounded apologetic, made a vague promise to reschedule, but I don't buy it. I am done for, no? (Canceling the first date is pretty much a death knell as far as I understand.) It would be a serious downer, but want to know if I should even think about sticking with it.
Thanks again and I really do love moosejaw.
A: Yeah, it’s probably over. Not sure why she canceled, but she did and she didn’t even try for a resched which is probably bad news. Don’t take it too personally though. She either didn’t feel like it, found another guy or just felt like studying.
Sorry but move on!

Q: Say I have a friend that wants to meet a potential girl to date, and he's going to a few halloween parties... What costume could he wear to maximize his date-ability?
A: Best costumes:
James Bond
Zorro
Disco guy with tinted glasses so you can easily peruse the field
Baseball player if you have a good butt
Let me know what you think!

Tip of the day from an avid reader: If you’re not getting a vibe from the girl after a few dates, don’t text/call/email as much as humanly possible. It’s a bigger turn off and a bit stalkerish. Drop back a bit and ask her out again after a few days or a week and see what happens.

Q: I pick my cuticles and sometimes they’re a bloody mess. If I have a date tonight, can I wear a bandaid or is that so 1st grade?
A: You can definitely wear the bandaid, just don’t tell him the real reason why – kinda gross and certainly not sexy!

Q: What if the guy I’m dating wears a gun? Is that safe?
A: If he is trained and knows how to use it and how not to use it, then it’s not only safe but sexy!

Q: Do you watch The Office? Michael Scott’s 3rd date sex rule – do all guys think like this?
A: Of course I watch The Office and no, I don’t think all guys think they’re having sex on date 3. That’s crazy talk! Love that she was so into it though!

Q: What should I do on my next date with my girl I’m dating? (#5) Snowboard or movie? Is snowboarding too adventurous?
A: If she’s a bad ass snowboarder, do that. Let her show off! If she’s ok or bad, do the movie.

Q: How do I tell a girl I like her?
A: Don’t tell her. Show her. You need to get flirty, go out together, get a little touchy (but not too touchy) and eventually go in for the kiss! (but don’t ask for the kiss – the ask is huge turnoff!)

Q: So my GF has been in South Africa for 4 months and I need a new and exciting way to show her I care. I've done the love letter/e-mail a lot and need something different. Unfortunately I'm pretty much limited to internet related things seeing as the postal service sucks and loses MJ shirts I send her! But I think e-cards are lame. Thanks!
A: Make her an iTunes playlist. It's the mixed tape of today. Or you can send her a recipe and tell her you'll cook it up when she gets home. Or make a youtube video of something she'd like. And send pics - or virtual flowers!
You're a good bf for even thinking about it! Hope she appreciates you.

Q: Dear DG
My GF and I have been exclusive for years and we are way beyond college. My question is: how do we introduce each other to new people. "This is my girlfriend" is too high school. "Signifigant other" is for gossip columnists. "Life partner" doesn't work for straights.
What?
A: I don’t mind girlfriend. It’s sweet and all in love. You should google and see what Oprah and Stedman do but I’d say stick with girlfriend.
Hope that helps!

Q: Is it weird to go trick or treating for a date at school? We go to Wisconsin so Halloween is cool here.
A: Can you go to a Halloween party instead of trick or treat? A party is a little more date-ish. If you really wanna do the trick or treating, keep it to an hour or less and then do dinner or a party or something else more intimate.
Hope that helps!

Q: Dear DG
I just found out on the sly that one of the girls in our social group is having a secret affair with her masseur. She is so smart and pretty but he looks like a toad with bad hair. He is SOOO beneath her that it's an embarrassment for everyone in the group. How can I let her boyfriend know without anyone finding out that it was me who ratted her out?
A: That’s a tough one. You should talk to your friend and tell her she needs to break up with her bf instead of cheating on him. Tell her that if she doesn’t break up, that he’ll find out since people are already talking. Be nice and be her friend but she’s wrong in the cheat.
No one likes a cheater.
