Q: I need help! I watched the Oscars with my boyfriend and he has the worst expectations for me. I hate it and don’t think I can cope. How do I set him straight so he knows that’s not realistic?
A: Show him all the before and after pics. Or show him the pics online where the stars have no makeup on. It’s crazy how fake it all is. Granted, they’re all gorgeous, but they have a lot of help. Botox, spanx, pads everywhere, airbrushing, eyebrow extensions, etc! Does he want you in the mirror, makeup chair and plastic surgeon’s your whole life? I know it’s hard to explain to guys who don’t see it, but hopefully he’ll get it and if not, find someone who does. You don’t deserve more pressure than we all put on ourselves.

Q: How do I get a girl if she hates me?
A: First question is, why does she hate you? If she’s got a good reason, there’s prob no great way except to start being nice and genuine and vulnerable with her. Don’t be the badass guy trying to get the chick. That never works! Be sweet but still cool and not a pushover. Very tough to come by (maybe that’s why I’m still dating!?)

Q: How do I work less so I can see my gf more? She’s so mad at me.
A: You have to make some sacrifices and some compromises. So maybe Fri, Sat and Wed nights, you don’t work but maybe Mondays and Thursdays, you watch tv together and you can be on your laptop and Tuesdays you work late at the office…. Would something like that work? That way, you can give her 100% on the nights that you’re giving to her.

Q: I love sweets but my boyfriend just went on a diet and he asked me to stop eating in front of him. What do I do? Is that a little excessive? Do I have to diet just cuz he does?
A: You don’t have to, but it’d be nice if you could help him out and eat your big sweets when you’re not together. If it changes your life then don’t do that but if you just change your cookie time from 9pm to 3pm, then I think that’d be a nice way to help him out.

Hey DG, you gave me some advice about starting a new relationship when I was going to be away all summer, and I just wanted to thank you for your advice. It worked out great! We talked every day on the phone, sent some real letters like you suggested, and he came to visit (luckily he is the kind of guy who wanted to visit a small town in the Arctic). I think your suggestions were a bit part of why the whole separation went amazingly smoothly. Now we have been back in the same place for almost six months, and we plan to be together for a long time.
