Q: Hey, so I met this guy at a benefit concert. He’s really cute, and real nice. I get really nervous and I can’t talk to guys well. I want to hang out with him and whatever, but I don’t know how to ask him!

A: Toughie but you just have to buck up and do it if you’re done waiting for him to ask. There’s really NO easy way. Make it casual and work it into conversation. So don’t say, “Do you want to go out some time?” Instead say, “Have you been to that new Italian place downtown? I keep meaning to try it. Wanna go with me sometime?”

Let me know how it goes!

A: Definitely flats! If you find he’s 6’2,” you can do heels next time.

Q: whats the best way to impress a girl without coming on too strong? i have a crush on a girl i work with and want to ask her out for coffee or something like that but dont want it to seem like a hot date if she says no or it doesnt work out? thanks

A: Just keep it pretty casual so it's not weird later but make it date-like enough that you don't get into the dreaded friend area.... So ask her out for coffee just like you would anyone else but then when you're there and you get a good read, get a little more flirty so she knows it's not just friends out for coffee.

Q: Went out with this girl last night. Told her I’d call but now after thinking about it, I don’t want to anymore. is that ok or do I need to call and tell her I’m not going to call?!

A: You can let it go and not call. It happens all the time! But…. Don’t do that in the future. It makes dating suck and it makes girls less trusting every time you say something optimistic. Not that I’m bitter!

Q: My boyfriend and I have been going out for a month and a half and holidays are approaching! I got him a shirt and a bandana. And I am knitting him a hat (which he asked for, I'm not surprising him with a hand knit hat). None of these things were very expensive but we haven't been going out for very long and we never agreed on a price to spend for holidays. Do you think this is ok? I started worrying because my sister got her boyfriend an expensive belt and they just started dating! We are both broke college students but i have no idea what he is getting me (he said something but gave no details). Thanks

A: I think you spent enough but if not, you can always get 1 more thing, hide it in the closet and if you don't want to give it last minute because you get your pres and find you did spend enough then you leave it there and return it the next day. Make sure it's returnable!

Q: Dating Girl I desperately need your advice. Long story short, I met this guy over the summer that I am completely crazy about. However, he has no idea how I feel. We hung out all the time in the summer as friends. Now we live a few hours away from each other but we talk everyday. He's become a really good friend but its killing me not to tell him how I feel. I don't want to make things weird between us, and I am really not brave about that kind of stuff. What do I do dating girl? He seriously is the perfect guy for me.

A: You need to appreciate her too. You need to know that staying home with the kids is a huge job and she needs some love too. Bring flowers home, write a little love note, wash the dishes. Do something for her and she’ll feel much more like getting you those beers while you watch the game!

Q: Hi Dating Girl,

I recently hooked one of my coworkers up on a blind date with a guy I know. Things went well and they hit it off right away. But, sure enough, after 3 months the love faded and he sorta stopped calling her. He totally ended things with her via text message. My question is - even though we are in a progressive society where texting and email have become a solid form of communication, is it now acceptable to break up with someone using that outlet?

A: NO! You can’t break up over text! I love a good text instead of a call as much as anyone but have some guts to pick up the phone and do your dirty work. Having said all that, if I was the one to deliver the bad news, I would love to text it and would find every way to make it seem acceptable.

Q: I'm on a serious diet and really don't wanna cheat. Is it ok to not drink on my date??

A: You'll have to make up an excuse. Meds is always a good one. You can tell him you're on an antibiotic and not allowed to drink. Or you can suck it up and get one and tell them tall so there's more soda than vodka and then just sip it. Or, there's always the ole honesty thing - if you're into that!

Q: Went to the bar last night and met the hottest guy. Went home with him (didn't sleep there) and he hasn't called yet. is that a one night stand??
Can I call him?

A: Sounds like a one-nighter. Hopefully you had fun and didn't have too many expectations. If you're dying, you could call him tomorrow just to get closure. Then you can stop making the, "maybe he lost my number" excuses.

Q: I am a graduate student and spend a lot of time in my lab working. When I am out of the lab I am usually doing some outdoor activity by myself. I don't like going to the bars and don't drink coffee. So my question for you
is, where does an attractive, intelligent grad student go to meet an attractive, intelligent girl to spend some time with?

A: Library, dog park (you may have to borrow a dog), inet sites (match.com, etc). Don't shy from the inet - it's made for busy guys like you!

Q: Should I wear an ugly sweater on a date or my fave hoody that’s more me? My roommate said I have to go sweater.

A: You should look nice if you’re going someplace nice. I wouldn’t wear an ugly sweater, but if you think all sweaters are ugly, then you’re probably ok. Is there a good compromise like a hoody sweater??

Q: So I dated a woman this past spring/summer who had just gotten out of a long/serious relationship/engagement. She told me from the outset that she still had some unresolved feelings for the guy, and she and he ultimately got back together. The boyfriend works with a friend of mine, and I hear enough from my friend to think that things won't last much longer between them this second time. I've dated a bit since she dumped me, but I'm not dating anyone right now and would like to try again with her if/when I get a chance. Until things change with her and the boyfriend, should I a) have absolutely no contact with her whatsoever, b) call/email her every couple weeks, just to let her know that I'm still alive and haven't forgotten her, or c) something else? I've been doing b), if that matters.

A: If it’s meant to be, you could do a, b, or c and it’ll be. If it’s not meant to be, you could do a, b, or c and it won’t be. Having said that, if you don’t believe in all that bs, I like b. Just keep doing what you’re doing to keep contact and be there when the guy leaves. Keep in mind though, she’ll be vulnerable at that point and when /if she comes running into your arms, she may still be thinking of the ex. Just keep that in mind.

Q: It’s my anniversary and I forgot a present. We’re supposed to have dinner in an hour! What do I do?!

A: Either get an online gift certif – lots of places have them now and you can just print it out. Or make a cute card with whatever you may have gotten her that happens to be “on order because the store ran out. It was supposed to be in yesterday but they screwed up!” Then make sure to go tomorrow and get it.
Hope that helps!
